16 Jul It’s about Time
One of the first and most important things to address when setting out on any new training or nutrition programme, is figuring out how and where you are going to find the time to give the new plan a decent go. You’re already busy. ‘Free-time’ simply doesn’t exist in your day, with all the competing elements of your responsibilities making their daily demands on you. The fear of not being able to give a programme ‘your all’ often holds you back, preventing you from starting a programme that would finally solve the issue that’s been nagging away at you for so long.
There is a list of things that we do day-to-day; it’s often not written down. There also exists a list of priorities, even less likely to be written down. What’s on your lists? What are the non-negotiables? What doesn’t really need to be there? Have you really thought about what your priorities are, at this time?
It’s very easy to say “right, let’s make time”, but what does that actually mean? It means being clear about what your priorities are, and getting comfortable with saying ‘No’, more often, to those time-sucking things which are not on that list and which move you further away from your goal. There is huge power and positivity in the word ‘No’. A few more ‘No’s per day sets boundaries. A few more ‘No’s per day provides clarity. A few more ‘No’s per day gives you more permission to choose what really works for you and, often by extension, your loved ones. Getting more comfortable with hearing yourself say ‘No’ dispels the myth that saying the word means that you’re being selfish. It’s not considered selfish putting your own oxygen mask on first during an in-flight emergency.
Where does coaching come in? Coaching will help identify the areas where you can take back a little time for YOU. It will also help you say a big ‘No’ to the endless mountain of information out there which actually serves to hold people back from moving toward their goals. There are broadly three camps of people when it comes to achieving their health goals through training and nutrition. The first group don’t really know where to start regarding which exercises are best, or what to eat. The second group know what to do, but don’t quite know how to make it work within the context of their lives. The third group know what to do, how to do it, but still struggle to make it happen or do things consistently enough to make a difference. Which camp are you in?
Whichever group you’re in, the limiting factor is not knowledge… once again it’s time. How many hours are lost by the folks in the first group searching for and picking up the latest tidbits and fads about which new diet or movement might work for them? How much more efficient could those in the second group be if they had a system and guide to follow? To those in the
third camp, how much of a relief would it be to you if getting done what needs to be done was actually made easy?
Try something different this time. Figure out what really matters in your day. Decide what you’re going to start saying ‘No’ to, more often. Get comfortable with it. You might not need a coach, but ask yourself which camp you’re in and look really closely at what has held you back in the past. Einstein said that it was madness to keep doing that same thing over and over again, and expecting an alternative outcome. Try something different. It’s about Time.
