How To Become The Best Version Of You

How To Become The Best Version Of You

Never in the history of mankind has there been as much information available, so readily, to so many. If you’re anywhere near the same age as me you will remember (not necessarily fondly) a time when we only had four channels to choose from on TV, encyclopaedias were an all-encompassing source of knowledge, and ‘Googling’ was something fancy Shane Warne could do with a cricket ball. The advances of the information-era come with its pitfalls however, not least the tendency of us all to compare our lives to the ‘air-brushed’ perfection we see not only on magazine covers, but on the social media feeds of our associates, friends and loved-ones.

“Stop trying to look like the person in the photo. Even the person in the photo doesn’t look like the person in the photo”.

The quote above leans towards the aesthetic but ‘The Best Version Of You’ is about much more than that. From how you feel about yourself to the aches and pains you have…from the quality of your relationships to your energy levels… if you were to ask yourself how satisfied you were in each of these areas, what would your honest response be? Which things are you happy with? Which areas are ‘fine’? And what could really do with a different approach and some positive change?

How to make genuine, lasting changes.

No matter which area you choose to try and improve, the following pathway can help you move towards your best ‘you’.

First, write down ten things in your life that are important to you, in no particular order. Once done, highlight the three that you could really do with improving right now, to positively affect your life. (These may not be the first three that you wrote down). Finally, from your shortlist of three, pick the one that you’d really like to focus on improving over the next fortnight.

Now that you’ve got ‘that thing’ down on paper, write down why you want to improve it. Following that, write down why it’s important that you do. Then make notes on what will be better about your life when ‘the thing’ you’re targeting has had a positive overhaul. Take your time with this step, write as much detail as you can muster. Even if you shred the paper afterwards, digging deep and giving this process a good effort makes success far more likely.

Time to break down the goal. What one small thing can you DEFINITELY do both today AND tomorrow, to move you closer to the goal, and therefore the ‘best version of yourself’?

Recruit some support! This could be a coach (I would say that) but could also be a confidante, trusted friend or family member. Sharing your successes as well as reframing any ‘failures’ as the ‘feedback’ that they actually are is invaluable.

Another downside of the information overload we experience when we open any given modern device, is the avalanche of information out there on any question you care to ask. Search long enough and you’ll find opposing viewpoints espoused by experts, leaving the layperson no wiser than when they started. Often the sheer volume and variety of answers available simply amplifies our inherent confirmation bias on a subject. Remember, a decent coach will have more questions than answers for you. A good coach will help drown out the noise and focus on how to make progress with the task at hand. After speaking with an excellent coach, you’ll feel empowered to execute meaningful changes… changes conceived by you and guided into actionable steps between the two of you.

With the above process in place, the objective is that you can start a daily practice of small things which nudge you in the direction of doing what matters to you, a little better. Getting the life goals that matter to you a little closer. Ignoring the ‘perfect bodied’, gourmet-meal eating, sun-kissed airbrushed nonsense we are bombarded with, and making real, sustainable changes that mean something to you.
